Kaiser‘s Spotted Newts, unlike European Newts, usually live in the water all year-round. Their red colouring, similar to flamingos, is a result of them eating small crustaceans. Without them, the newts fade. The age of the animal also affects their colouring.
Amazingly, the spawn are laid during winter. After about 2 weeks the 14mm larvae hatch. After about 4 months, they lose their gills (metamorphosis). Kaiser‘s Spotted Newts become sexually mature between the ages of 2 and 4 years.
