Unlike deer antlers, the horns of the ibex are never shed, but continue to grow throughout their lifetime. They can grow up to 1.4m long in males. The annual growth rings of the horns shows the males age.
Males compete against each other to display dominance and gain their place in the hierarchy of their group. They use their horns to fight. The losing buck retires after the fight.
