At the end of the 19th century, the population of Asiatic Lions fell to only 18 individuals in the Gir Reserve, in northwest India. Through targeted protection and resettlement of the few remaining lions from other areas, the population has grown to 350 today.
Although the mane of the male asiatic lion is a lot less developed than its african relatives, it still serves as a status symbol and as protection against injury in clashes with other lions.
