Their plumage is made up of new and old feathers. The fresh feathers of the Bearded Vulture are white, the older ones turn a rusty red colour over time. This colour change is caused by "bathing" in rusty soil.
As well as carrion and small animals, Bearded Vultures feed mainly on bones up to 30cm in length, which they swallow whole. If they want to eat the bone marrow, the large bones must first be crushed. To do this, the Bearded Vulture drops them from up high, onto rocks.
