It owes its name to the characteristic "ringing" sound. The outstanding divers forage for food on riverbeds. They can reach depths of up to 8m. Goldeneyes can dive up to 1,200 times a day.
Goldeneyes are cave breeders. Most of the time they nest in shallow tree hollows, at heights of 6 - 8m. Shortly after hatching, the young leave the nesting hole. Lured by the maternal calls they jump in the water. They remain unscathed and follow their mother to the next body of water.
