Threatened with extinction
Originally, the European Ground Squirrel was found all over Europe. Today they are only found in scattered populations from the Czech Republic through to Slovakia, Hungary and Austria to Serbia, Montenegro and western Romania. In Germany, the ground squirrel lived in the eastern parts of the Erzgebirge, where they went extinct in 1961. The European Ground Squirrel is listed in the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as endangered. This has been caused by the destruction of natural habitats and the subsequent reforestation of these areas.
