The Hyacinthine Macaw is the world's largest parrot species. They are extremely social and live in pairs, in small flocks. The skillful climbers have a large, powerful beak that helps them crack even rock hard nuts.
Like all great parrots, the Hyacinthine Macaw is also at risk of extinction. Illegal fishing and habitat destruction have reduced their population to only 5,000 individuals. Organised breeding programs have been successful and have helped to boost population numbers.
