In 1965 Nuremberg Zoo was the first zoo in the world to successfully breed the Ural Owl. The zoo regularly releases zoo-born animals into the wild in parts of the Bavarian Forest National Park and Austria, to help repopulate the areas.
The territorial call of the Ural Owl is very impressive. It consists of a series of huh calls that can be heard from far away. Incidentally, the Ural Owl is also known as the “Schlagkauz”, as it aggressively defends its young.
