The Peruphasma schultei or Peruvian stick insect was discovered in 2004 in the Cordillera del Condor, in the north of Peru. They live within a five hectare radius.
Under the direction of the German biologist Rainer Schulte, which the species scientific name is named after, a Peruvian conservation organisation was created, which included a breeding program for the Peruphasma schultei. It is hoped this will save the insect from extinction.
