VENUE
Nuremberg Zoo (Tiergarten Nürnberg) was founded by the City
of Nuremberg in 1912 and relocated to its present site in 1939.
Covering 65 hectares, it is one of the largest zoological parks in
Europe and often is referred to as the “Landscape Zoo.” The Zoo
is home to about 250 species of animals including five species of
marine mammals. Constructed in 1971, the dolphinarium was
extended by an innovative outdoor exhibit for dolphins and sea
lions and a tropical eco-display hall for manatees in 2011. The
Blue Salon provides underwater viewing of the dolphins, sea lions
and manatees. The AquaPark, which houses polar bears, seals,
sea lions, otters and penguins, was reconstructed and extended
in 2001 and 2004.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
– Review scientific studies relevant to the assessment of
animal welfare in zoos;
– Evaluate the extent to which known indicators can be
applied or adapted to evaluate welfare in a zoological park
focusing on marine mammals;
– Identify possible gaps in our knowledge regarding animal
welfare and define specific research needs.
