Kai, the ten-month old son of dolphin girl Nynke from the Tiergarten Nürnberg is doing magnificently. Kai lives at the dolphinarium Harderwijk in the Netherlands. Even though he is still being fed on milk by his mother, Kai eats almost 1.5 kilograms of fish a day. He already moves independently in the water. But his mother Nynke still watches carefully over him.
28-year-old Nynke was born in Florida in the USA and came via Münster to the Tiergarten Nürnberg, where she had been living since 1990. In October 2008 she was sent off to the Netherlands "honeymooning" together with two more female dolphins. In Harderwijk the dolphins live together in a large group.
The Tiergarten Nürnberg currently has six dolphins. Four of them were born in zoos as Kai was. Only the old Moby - at the age of 50 one of the oldest dolphins in the world - was caught in the wild, just as about 25-year-old Jenny.
