Initiative "Original Regional"

Since 1997, the "Original Regional" initiative has been committed to marketing regional products and services from small and medium-sized companies in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Because transport routes are short, customers can be sure of getting fresh produce, and fruit and vegetables harvested ripe in their own region, thus making a contribution to climate protection.

Manfred Gehr, project director at Original Regional, says: "We attach great importance to the fact that consumers understand how much sense it makes to look for regional products when shopping. Goods from the immediate region travel short distances. This saves energy resources and reduces toxic emissions. In addition, medium-sized companies are strengthened and jobs and training places within the region are maintained."

A sign of quality within the Metropolitan Region: "Original Regional"

Over 140 regional sales outlets, across the entire Metropolitan Region offer products from about 50 "Original Regional" suppliers. In addition, "Original Regional" supports farmers' markets and farm shops within the region. Furthermore, large customers, such as company canteens and institutions increasingly buy fresh produce from the region.
"Original Regional" includes not only food produced in the region, but also crafts and the service industry. The "Original Regional" certificate was designed for all these companies, to guarantee that product have heir origin within the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region and that suppliers are committed to meeting the quality criteria. Under the heading "From the region – for the region", this contributes to strengthening regional economic cycles.
